Leading economists warn unaffordable house prices might be pushed even higher

Radio National Breakfast — Separate stories podcast - Un pódcast de ABC listen

The third week of the election campaign has seen both sides of politics announce new housing policies which have left some leading economists warning they risk pushing already unaffordable house prices even higher. The Coalition's plan would allow first-time buyers — of newly built homes — to be able to deduct interest payments on up to $650,000 of their mortgage from their income taxes. Meanwhile Labor wants to make all first home buyers eligible to purchase a house with a five per cent home deposit. GUEST: Katy Gallagher, Minister for Finance, Women, the Public Service and Government Services Producer: Jacqueline Breen
