Dozens of countries are opposing a move by a Canadian company to circumvent international law and begin mining in the Pacific Ocean. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) has to date prevented deep sea mining in international waters while it established the governance and environment frameworks around how it occurs. But Vancouver-based miner The Metals Company has gone around the ISA, applying directly to the Trump administration to begin mining in 2027.
