Kiinan poliisi uskoi Davidin menehtyneen vaeltaessaan Loikkaavan Tiikerin Rotkossa 11. elokuuta, ja tähän Davidin perheen oli tyytyminen seuraavien vuosien ajan.Vuonna 2011 Sneddonit saivat tietää, ettei David ehkä sittenkään kuollut vaellusreissullaan.
