Alexandra Popoff is a former Moscow journalist and Alfred Friendly Press Partners fellow. She is an expert on Russian literature and cultural history and the author of five literary biographies, including the award-winning Sophia Tolstoy and Vasily Grossman and the Soviet Century. Her book The Wives became a Wall Street Journal best non-fiction title for 2012. Popoff’s biography of Vasily Grossman won the Canadian Jewish Literary Award for biography, Saskatchewan Nonfiction Award, became a finalist in the 2019 National Jewish Book Awards, and was long-listed for the 2019 Cundill History Prize. Her new book, a biography of Ayn Rand, will be published by Yale University Press (Jewish Lives) in 2024. Popoff has written articles and reviews for The Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, Literary Hub, The Globe and Mail, National Post, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Tablet Magazine.
